Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is expressed on various cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial and epithelial cells, but not on erythrocytes.
B2M is also present in free form in plasma and shares homology with immunoglobulin constant regions, exhibiting a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure. It plays a role in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells.
The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2-microglobulin levels are used as a biomarker for renal function and as a prognostic marker in HIV infection.
