Target Information
The PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, including PRKCA (PKC alpha), is activated intracellularly by signal transduction pathways. In humans, at least 12 different PKC polypeptides have been identified. These isoforms differ in structure, tissue distribution, localization, and substrate specificity.
PKC alpha, beta I, beta II, and gamma form the conventional family; their activities are Ca²⁺- and phospholipid-dependent. PKC family members phosphorylate diverse protein targets and are involved in multiple cellular signaling pathways. They also act as major receptors for phorbol esters, a class of tumor promoters.
PKC alpha is implicated in cellular processes such as adhesion, transformation, cell cycle checkpoint control, and cell volume regulation. Mouse knockout studies suggest its role in cardiac contractility and Ca²⁺ handling in myocytes.
