SMADs are members of the MAD-related family of molecules. These intracellular proteins are key components in the signaling pathways of serine/threonine kinase receptors of the TGF-beta superfamily.
SMADs are categorized as:
- R-SMADs: SMAD1, SMAD2, SMAD5, SMAD8, SMAD9
- Co-SMAD: SMAD4
- I-SMADs: SMAD6, SMAD7
SMAD8 and SMAD9 share high sequence homology and are often used interchangeably in literature.
