Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which is homologous to the Drosophila gene mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and the C. elegans gene Sma.
SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.
SMAD1 mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses.
Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinase, forming a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation.
It is a target for SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) and undergoes ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
