Target Information
Serotonin plays a major role in cardiovascular function and gastrointestinal motility. It mediates its effects through several G protein-coupled receptors, designated 5-HT (SR) receptors. The SR-2 receptors include SR-2A, SR-2B, and SR-2C subtypes, which activate phospholipase C and release intracellular calcium in response to serotonin.
- SR-2A: Involved in tracheal smooth muscle contraction, bronchoconstriction, and aldosterone production; associated with psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia.
- SR-2B: Expressed in cardiovascular tissues, gut, and brain; plays a role in cardiac pathology.
- SR-2C: Thought to mediate effects of atypical antipsychotic drugs.
