Target Information
Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide present in C cells of the normal and hyperplastic thyroid. Staining for calcitonin may be used to identify C cell proliferative abnormalities ranging from hyperplasia to invasive tumors. In medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, calcitonin staining produces a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern, and amyloid deposits within the tumor may also exhibit calcitonin activity.
