Target Information
The inhibin alpha subunit joins either the beta A or beta B subunit to form a pituitary FSH secretion inhibitor. Inhibin regulates gonadal stromal cell proliferation negatively and exhibits tumor-suppressor activity. Serum levels of inhibin reflect granulosa-cell tumor size and can serve as a marker for primary and recurrent disease. In prostate cancer, expression of the inhibin alpha-subunit gene is suppressed in poorly differentiated cells. Expression varies among gonadal and extragonadal tissues, suggesting inhibin functions as both a growth/differentiation factor and hormone.
