Background
Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for forming the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fibers in eukaryotes. Each nucleosome consists of approximately 146 bp of DNA wrapped around an octamer composed of pairs of core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). Chromatin fibers are further compacted by linker histone H1 to form higher-order structures. The gene encoding histone H3 is intronless and replication-dependent, located on chromosome 6p22-p21.3, and transcripts lack polyA tails, containing instead a palindromic termination element.
