Background
Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fibers in eukaryotes. Approximately 146 bp of DNA is wrapped around a nucleosome, which consists of an octamer of core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). The chromatin fiber is further compacted through the interaction of linker histone H1 with DNA between nucleosomes, forming higher-order chromatin structures. This gene, located on chromosome 6p22-p21.3, encodes a replication-dependent histone H3 family member and lacks introns and polyA tails, containing instead a palindromic termination element.
