Target Information
Voltage-gated sodium channels are heteromeric proteins essential for the generation and propagation of action potentials in muscle and neuronal cells. These channels consist of one alpha and two beta subunits. The alpha subunit provides channel activity, while the beta-1 subunit modulates the kinetics of channel inactivation.
The SCN1B gene encodes the sodium channel beta-1 subunit. Mutations in this gene are associated with generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures plus, Brugada syndrome 5, and cardiac conduction defects. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
