Target Information
The COL1A1 gene encodes the pro-alpha1 chain of type I collagen, which forms a triple helix composed of two alpha1 chains and one alpha2 chain. Type I collagen is fibril-forming and abundant in connective tissues such as bone, cornea, dermis, and tendon.
Mutations in COL1A1 are linked to osteogenesis imperfecta (types I–IV), Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (types VIIA and Classical), Caffey Disease, and idiopathic osteoporosis.
Reciprocal translocations between chromosomes 17 and 22 involving COL1A1 and PDGFB genes are associated with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, leading to aberrant growth factor expression.
Two transcript variants result from alternate polyadenylation signals.
