Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. These proteins are key regulators of growth and differentiation. BMPs were initially identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo at extraskeletal sites. BMP4 plays an essential role in the initiation of bone formation, and reduced expression has been linked to several bone disorders, including Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein.
