UBA5 유전자는 E1-like ubiquitin-activating enzyme family에 속하는 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 고에너지 티오에스터 결합을 통해 ubiquitin-fold modifier 1을 활성화합니다. 두 가지 상이한 isoform을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이스 변이체가 존재하며, 염색체 1에 위치한 유사유전자(pseudogene)도 확인되었습니다.
