Target Information
Cardiac Troponin I (TNNI3) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle, forming a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT). The TnT subunit binds to tropomyosin, forming a troponin-tropomyosin complex anchored by TnI binding to actin within thin filaments. When calcium binds to TnC, the inhibitory region of TnI is released, enabling myosin attachment and muscle contraction. Measurement of blood TnI and TnT levels is an important diagnostic indicator of heart muscle damage, useful for differentiating angina from myocardial infarction. Cardiac Troponin I also inhibits angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro. Mutations in the TNNI3 gene cause familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
