Target Information
Rab3-interacting molecules (RIMs) are synaptic proteins essential for neuronal transmission and plasticity. Rim1 and Rim2 show overlapping but distinct expression patterns in the brain. Deletion of both genes in mice leads to postnatal mortality due to impaired neurotransmitter release. Synapses lacking RIM proteins can release neurotransmitters but fail to respond to normal Ca²⁺ triggers. RIM2 acts as an effector protein for Rab3, binding to Rab3 on synaptic vesicles in a GTP-dependent manner.
