Target Information
Action potentials in vertebrate neurons are followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that may persist for several seconds and influence neuronal firing patterns. Each AHP component is kinetically distinct and mediated by different calcium-activated potassium channels.
The protein encoded by the KCNN1 gene is activated before membrane hyperpolarization and helps regulate neuronal excitability by contributing to the slow component of synaptic AHP. It is an integral membrane protein forming a voltage-independent calcium-activated channel with three other calmodulin-binding subunits. KCNN1 belongs to the KCNN family of potassium channels.
