This gene encodes a member of a highly conserved protein family found across archaea, vertebrates, and plants. The encoded protein may play a role in RNA metabolism. Mutations in this gene are associated with Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome. An alternative transcript has been described, but its biological function is not yet determined. A closely linked pseudogene is also present.
