This antibody detects endogenous levels of total MRPL24.
Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary widely across species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL24 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein that is more than twice the size of its E. coli counterpart. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
