Target Information

This intronless gene is believed to have originated via retrotransposition of a fully processed PCBP-2 mRNA. PCBP1 and PCBP2 have paralogues resulting from gene duplication events. The encoded protein is multifunctional and, together with PCBP2 and hnRNPK, forms part of the major cellular polydomains involved in RNA binding.
PCBP1 functions as a translational coactivator of poliovirus RNA by interacting with stem-loop IV of the IRES and promotes viral RNA replication by binding to its 5′-terminal cloverleaf structure. It is also implicated in translational control of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, HPV16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA, as well as in stabilizing alpha-globin mRNA through formation of a specific mRNP complex.
