Medea는 초파리(Drosophila melanogaster)의 유전자로, 최초로 발견된 두 개의 Smad 유전자 중 하나입니다. 이 유전자는 모계 효과 치사(maternal effect lethality)를 기반으로 명명되었으며, decapentaplegic 이형접합체 자손의 치사를 유발하는 모계 효과 돌연변이 선별 과정에서 Medea와 Mothers against dpp 유전자가 함께 확인되었습니다.
