This antibody is directed against human mesothelin protein. Cross-reactivity with homologues from other species has not been tested.
Target Information
Mesothelin was originally identified as a differentiation antigen of mesotheliomas, ovarian cystadenocarcinomas, and pancreatic adenocarcinomas. It is a GPI-anchored, cell-surface glycoprotein mainly expressed by mesothelial cells of the pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal membranes. Aberrant expression is observed in several cancers, including endometrioid uterine adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus, stomach, lung, and cervix.
Proteolytic cleavage of mesothelin yields a soluble fragment known as megakaryocyte potentiating factor (MPF), which can stimulate megakaryocyte colony formation in murine bone marrow cultures. Both Mesothelin and MPF are implicated in tumorigenesis, promoting tumor cell proliferation, migration, anchorage-independent growth, and metastatic spread.
