Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, some microvascular endothelial cells also express cytokeratins.
There are at least 20 different cytokeratins ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points of 5–8.5, identifiable via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Cytokeratins are classified into two types:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from both types. Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins are useful for tumor identification and classification.
