Target Information
Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) regulate intracellular levels of cAMP and cGMP, which act as second messengers in numerous physiological processes such as vascular resistance, cardiac output, visceral motility, immune response, inflammation, neuroplasticity, vision, and reproduction. PDEs form a large superfamily divided into 10 families, each distinguished by structure, tissue expression, localization, substrate specificity, regulation, and inhibitor sensitivity. The structural and functional diversity of PDEs makes them promising pharmacological targets for diseases modulated by cyclic nucleotide signaling (Hetman et al., 2000).
