Target Information
Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) regulate intracellular levels of cAMP and cGMP, key second messengers in various physiological processes such as vascular resistance, cardiac output, visceral motility, immune response, inflammation, neuroplasticity, vision, and reproduction. PDEs form a large superfamily divided into 10 families, distinguishable by structure, tissue expression, localization, substrate specificity, regulation, and sensitivity to inhibitors. The diversity of PDEs makes them promising targets for pharmacotherapy of diseases modulated by cyclic nucleotide signaling (Hetman et al., 2000).
