Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The DAP3 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that also participates in apoptotic pathways initiated by tumor necrosis factor-alpha, Fas ligand, and gamma interferon. This protein may bind ATP/GTP and act as a functional partner of mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR have been identified but encode the same protein. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
