Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the keratin family. Keratins are intermediate filament proteins that maintain the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into cytokeratins and hair keratins.
Type I cytokeratins consist of acidic proteins arranged in heterotypic pairs of keratin chains. This smallest known acidic cytokeratin is uniquely expressed in the periderm, the transient superficial layer covering the developing epidermis.
The gene encoding type I intermediate filament chain keratin 17 is expressed in nail bed, hair follicle, sebaceous glands, and other epidermal appendages. Mutations lead to Jackson-Lawler type pachyonychia congenita and steatocystoma multiplex.
