Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins have been detected in certain microvascular endothelial cells.
At least 20 different cytokeratins (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) can be identified using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. CKs are divided into two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins serve as valuable markers for tumor identification and classification.
