Target Information
G protein-coupled receptor GPR49 (also known as LGR5) is expressed in brain, skeletal muscle, placenta, and spinal cord. ESTs have been isolated from normal human brain (amygdala), embryo, and placenta libraries, as well as from germ cell, uterus, and brain libraries.
G-protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) form one of the largest families of signaling molecules, with over a thousand predicted members. They share a common structure of seven membrane-spanning helices and exist in both active and inactive forms.
Activation of GPCRs triggers signaling via G-proteins and downstream effectors, while regulatory mechanisms control their deactivation. This dynamic signaling plays a crucial role in cellular physiology and pharmacological research. Notably, GPCR-targeted drugs such as Zyprexa (Eli Lilly) and Claritin (Schering-Plough) are major therapeutics in mental health and allergy treatment.
