Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme involved in catalyzing the conversion of angiotensin I into the physiologically active peptide angiotensin II. Angiotensin II acts as a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating peptide that regulates blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance. This enzyme plays a key role in the renin-angiotensin system. The presence or absence of a 287 bp Alu repeat element in this gene has been associated with circulating enzyme levels and cardiovascular pathophysiologies. Two major alternatively spliced variants encode somatic and testicular isozymes, both of which are active. Additional splice variants have been identified, though their full-length sequences remain undetermined.
