Target Information
This gene encodes a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor expressed in oligodendroglial tumors of the brain. The protein regulates ventral neuroectodermal progenitor cell fate and is involved in chromosomal translocation t(14;21)(q11.2;q22) associated with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The chromosomal location on chromosome 21 may relate to learning deficits in Down syndrome.
Tissue specificity: Expressed in the brain, in oligodendrocytes. Strongly expressed in oligodendrogliomas; weak to moderate in astrocytomas; variable in glioblastomas.
