Product Specific Information

This antibody recognizes a unique extracellular epitope of CD2, a 50 kDa glycoprotein present on human peripheral blood T-lymphocytes and NK cells; also expressed by all thymocytes.

Target Information

CD2 (LFA-2) is a monomeric surface antigen (MW 45–58 kDa) expressed on all peripheral blood T cells and some NK cells, but not on B lymphocytes. It is one of the earliest T-cell markers, found on over 95% of thymocytes.
Monoclonal antibodies against CD2 inhibit rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes, indicating CD2’s role as or association with the erythrocyte receptor.
CD2–CD58 interactions stabilize adhesion between T cells and antigen-presenting cells. Despite low affinity in solution, this interaction provides strong adhesion at the cellular interface.
T cell activation increases CD2 expression and mobility, enhancing CD2–CD58 contact and strengthening intercellular adhesion.
CD2 deficiency reduces intestinal inflammation and aids infection control.
Diseases associated with CD2 dysfunction include penile squamous cell carcinoma and immune deficiency due to thymus absence.
