Target Information
CYP11A1 (Cytochrome P450C11A1, Cytochrome P450scc, Cytochrome P450 subfamily XIA) is an enzyme catalyzing the first step of steroid biosynthesis under cAMP signal modulation.
In steroidogenic cells, CYP11A1 converts cholesterol to pregnenolone, regulated by hormonal control of cholesterol availability.
Expression of CYP11A1 is controlled by transcription factor SF-1; the SF-1 binding site is essential for hormonal stimulation.
c-Jun and SF-1 may act synergistically to activate CYP11A1 gene expression. Forskolin and 8-Br-cAMPS elevate CYP11A1 mRNA levels in interstitial cells with functional adenylate cyclase.
