Target Information
The alpha-1b adrenoceptor is an adrenergic receptor that causes contraction of smooth muscle cells, controlling vascular tone and blood pressure, and contributing to the development of atherosclerosis.
Reduced expression of alpha-1b adrenoceptor is associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
It can act as a proto-oncogene when constitutively activated, inducing neoplastic transformation in cell lines.
The receptor is expressed in adrenal, aorta, brain regions, eye, heart, kidney, liver, prostate, spinal cord, and spleen.
ESTs have been isolated from kidney (normal and cancer) and lung carcinoma libraries.
