Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS). SOD catalyzes the dismutation reaction of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide, which is then converted to O₂ and H₂O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:
- SOD1 (Cu,Zn-SOD): Intracellular, homodimeric enzyme found in all eukaryotes.
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme located in the matrix, containing manganese as a cofactor.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular, heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone that delivers Cu to SOD1, activating it through cofactor insertion.
