Target Information

Scn2b is a member of voltage-gated sodium channels (NaV) responsible for action potential initiation and propagation in excitable cells such as nerve, muscle, and neuroendocrine cells. It is also expressed at low levels in non-excitable cells, where its role remains unclear. Scn2b is crucial for the assembly, expression, and functional modulation of the sodium channel heterotrimeric complex. The beta-2 subunit increases plasma membrane surface area and promotes microvilli formation. Scn2b interacts with Tenascin R precursor (TNR) and may regulate sodium channel clustering and activity at nodes of Ranvier. The SCN2B gene encodes the beta-2 subunit of the type II voltage-gated sodium channel, involved in cell-cell adhesion and migration. Mutations in SCN2B are associated with Brugada Syndrome, atrial fibrillation, and sudden infant death syndrome.
