Target Information

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits.
Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa.

CRP is synthesized by the liver, and its plasma concentration increases dramatically during inflammatory processes.
It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays a key role in innate immunity.

CRP functions as:

• An opsonin and activator of monocytes/macrophages
• A scavenger during cell necrosis by binding nuclear components
• A mediator in pathogen recognition and elimination

Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
