Target Information
Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with high tissue specificity. FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and play a key role in intracellular lipid utilization. There are at least six distinct FABP types, each showing unique tissue expression patterns. Due to their small size, FABPs rapidly leak from damaged cells, making them useful serum markers for cell injury. Liver FABP serves as a sensitive indicator for hepatocyte damage both in vitro and in vivo, and its absence or reduction helps identify histologically damaged tissues. FABP is also used as a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis in toxicology assays and in monitoring liver damage during transplantation.
