Target Information
The MUC7 gene encodes a small salivary mucin involved in bacterial clearance in the oral cavity and facilitates mastication, speech, and swallowing. The central domain contains tandem repeats of 23 amino acids, contributing to its antimicrobial and antifungal activities. The most common allele has six repeats, and certain variants may be associated with asthma susceptibility. Alternative splicing produces transcripts with different 5' UTRs but encoding the same protein.
