Target Information
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major cause of acute and chronic liver disease and the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis. Approximately 350–400 million people worldwide are affected or carriers. HBV infection can lead to persistent intracellular viral carriage and hepatocellular carcinoma. Vaccination against HBV is a key component of preventive medicine and is administered to children in many countries. HBV belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family and typically causes more severe disease than hepatitis A virus.
