Target Information
p73 protein is a member of the p53 family of proteins. The tumor-suppressor protein p53 exhibits sequence-specific DNA binding, interacts with various cellular and viral proteins, and induces cell cycle arrest in response to DNA damage. Upon genotoxic stress such as UV irradiation or DNA damage, p53 accumulates in the nucleus through post-translational modifications. Activation of p53 can lead to cell cycle arrest or apoptosis, preventing proliferation of genetically damaged cells. These p53-dependent pathways maintain genomic stability by eliminating damaged cells. High levels of p53 accumulation are potential markers for malignancy.
