Target Information

Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins capable of binding two Fe³⁺ ions along with an anion, usually bicarbonate. Transferrin is responsible for iron transport from absorption and heme degradation sites to storage and utilization sites. Under normal conditions, about one-third of total blood transferrin carries bound iron. Measurement of transferrin levels serves as an indicator of blood iron-carrying capacity and can reveal abnormalities such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also play a role in stimulating cell proliferation.
