Target Information
T cell receptors (TCR) discriminate foreign from self-peptides presented by MHC class II molecules, essential for adaptive immune responses.
Recognition of self-peptides by TCRs has been linked to autoimmune diseases, while mutant self-peptides are associated with tumors.
Superantigen engagement of TCRs can lead to toxic shock syndrome. Autoantibodies to V beta segments have been isolated from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), potentially regulating inflammatory responses.
Most human T cells express TCR alpha-beta with either CD4 or CD8. A small subset lacks both (double negative, DN), which may increase in autoimmune or immunodeficiency disorders. Gamma-delta T cells, primarily found in epithelial tissues, show reduced diversity and possess antitumor and immunoregulatory functions.
