Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. This family includes growth and differentiation factors that play key roles in bone formation and development. BMP4 is crucial for endochondral bone formation, and reduced expression has been linked to bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region produces three transcript variants encoding the same protein.
