The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, responsible for the translocation of various molecules across cellular membranes.
ABC proteins are categorized into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
MRP1 (ABCC1) is part of the MRP subfamily, associated with multidrug resistance. It functions as a multispecific organic anion transporter, handling substrates such as oxidized glutathione, cysteinyl leukotrienes, and activated aflatoxin B1.
Additionally, it transports glucuronides and sulfate conjugates of steroid hormones and bile salts.
Alternative splicing by exon deletion results in multiple splice variants, all maintaining the original open reading frame.
