Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein. Alternate splice variants have been described but their full-length nature has not been determined.
