ALDH1A1은 aldehyde dehydrogenase 단백질 패밀리에 속하며, 알코올 대사의 주요 산화 경로의 두 번째 효소입니다. 간에서 발견되는 두 주요 isoform(세포질형과 미토콘드리아형)은 전기영동 이동도, 반응 속도, 세포내 위치에 따라 구분됩니다. 대부분의 백인은 두 isozyme을 모두 가지지만, 약 50%의 동양인은 미토콘드리아형이 결여되어 있습니다. 이는 동양인에서 급성 알코올 중독 빈도가 높은 원인 중 하나로 제시됩니다.
