Target Information
In vertebrates, there are four major glucose-phosphorylating isoenzymes: hexokinase I, II, III, and IV. Hexokinase catalyzes the first step in glucose metabolism by phosphorylating glucose to produce glucose-6-phosphate, committing it to the glycolytic pathway. Hexokinase is an allosteric enzyme inhibited by its product, glucose-6-phosphate (GLC-6-P).
Hexokinase 2 is predominantly expressed in insulin-responsive tissues such as skeletal muscle. Its expression is insulin-responsive, and studies in rats suggest involvement in the elevated glycolysis rates observed in rapidly growing cancer cells.
