Target Information
Melanopsin is an opsin-like protein located in the retinal ganglion cells of mammals. It forms part of a secondary optical system that parallels the classic rod and cone system and directly communicates with the suprachiasmatic nucleus, regulating circadian rhythms. Melanopsin knockout mice show reduced ability to entrain to light/dark cycles, confirming its role as the primary photopigment in circadian regulation.
