Target Information

G protein-coupled receptor GPR49 (LGR5) is expressed in brain, skeletal muscle, placenta, and spinal cord. ESTs have been isolated from normal human brain (amygdala), embryo, and placenta libraries, as well as from human germ cell, uterus, and brain libraries.
G-protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) form one of the largest families of signaling molecules, sharing a structural motif of seven membrane-spanning helices. They exist in active and inactive forms, with various ligands triggering conformational changes leading to G-protein signaling and downstream effects.
The regulation of GPCR activity has significant physiological and pharmacological implications, driving research for new drug candidates. Examples of GPCR-targeted drugs include Zyprexa (Eli Lilly) and Claritin (Schering-Plough).
