Product Specific Information

Description:
The OKT9 monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD71, a 170–180 kDa type II transmembrane protein known as the transferrin receptor. CD71 functions as a homodimer and is essential for cellular growth. It is expressed by immature proliferating cells and at low levels on resting mature lymphocytes. Stimulation of T and B cells upregulates CD71 expression.

Applications Reported:
Reported for use in flow cytometric analysis.

Applications Tested:
Tested by flow cytometric analysis of PHA-stimulated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Recommended ≤0.5 µg per test in a final volume of 100 µL. Cell number may range from 10⁵ to 10⁸ cells/test. Optimize titration for best performance.

Storage and Handling:
Use in a sterile environment.

Target Information

Cellular uptake of iron occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis of the transferrin receptor–ligand complex into endosomes. Acidification leads to iron release, followed by recycling of the apotransferrin-receptor complex to the cell surface. The transferrin receptor is essential for erythrocyte and nervous system development. Serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) levels are used to detect erythropoietin (EPO) misuse and as a diagnostic marker for various anemias, including those associated with rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, irritable bowel syndrome, and HIV infection.
